Grape Source
The William Hill Napa Valley Merlot is produced from fruit grown primarily from its estate vineyards, located in the mountains and bench lands just south of Stags Leap in Napa Valley. Merlot from this growing region typically exhibits lush cherry and raspberry flavors. The grapes were hand harvested from September 17 through October 8, 2002 at an average 23.7º Brix.
Vintage
The 2002 harvest was all about patience. The weather in key wine regions was unusually cool early in the growing season, while summer and fall saw extended heat spells. Parts of the Napa Valley saw some April frost and late rains in May, while summer brought a long, mild growing season with only a few manageable heat spikes in late September and early October – bringing an end to harvest.
Winemaking
The wine was fermented at 85ºF in stainless steel and 25% of the blend underwent whole berry fermentation. The wine was aged in a combination of new and lightly used French (80%) and American (20%) oak barrels for 15 months
Winemaker notes
The 2002 Napa Valley Merlot shows ripe black cherry, red berry and licorice on the nose complemented by spicy oak. On the palate the wine delivers bright, flashy red fruit with soft tannins and a long, supple finish.
Food Recommendations
This food-loving Merlot is a great match for roasted beef, lamb or wild game. It also pairs nicely with simpler fare, such as tomato and herb pasta, hearty or richer stews. Try with a fresh tomato, basil and mozzarella pizza.
