This 100% Chardonnay is a good example of cool climate Carneros Chardonnay from Buchli Station and high elevation Chardonnay of Atlas Peak, in the Napa Valley. All of the grapes were hand-harvested at night from September 18, through October 15, 2003 at an average 24.7º Brix.
Winemaking
This Chardonnay is a first-rate example of cool climate Carneros Chardonnay as grown on the Buchli Station vineyard and at the high elevation of our vineyards, in the Napa Valley. All of the grapes were hand-harvested at night from August 20 through September 14, 2004. The grapes were whole cluster pressed and fermented in 100% French oak barrels (80% new) for 10 months. The wine was aged on its lees with twice monthly batonage, and to enhance the texture and add buttery nuances, 100% of the wine underwent malolactic fermentation.
Winemaker notes
Carneros, in the southern reaches of the Napa Valley, is known for cool nighttime temperatures; well-drained soils and afternoon breezes, yielding exceptionally forward Chardonnay fruit with distinct tropical nuances. Chardonnay, grown high in the eastern mountains of the Napa Valley, develops exceptional stone fruit flavors and minerality, enhancing the body and texture of the wine.
2004 vintage was a great vintage for ripe Chardonnay from the Estate vineyards. This reserve Chardonnay shows explosive aromas of tangerine, ripe pear and tropical fruit complemented by smoky oak. The wine emphasizes minerality on the palate, with tremendous flavor complexity, rich, plush mouthfeel and exceptional length and breadth.
Food Recommendations
Shellfish, seafood and poultry are superb matches for this elegant Chardonnay. With its well-integrated oak flavors, this wine is also an excellent companion for veal, pork, a rich risotto or pasta dishes that feature cream-based sauces.
